In a complex and changing world, here is the challenge:
How do we design for diversity, improve continuously, iterate quickly, and still minimise our waste?
Modularity lets us simplify everything we do. It separates a complex product into discrete components that can be individually removed, repaired, improved, replicated, customized, or recycled.
Using modular design we can offer more choice with less waste. We can learn and improve faster. And we can extend the life of our products because every component is upgradable. Pretty smart, right?
Take our humble M6 capping nut. This tiny workhorse clamps your Wishbone Bike frame, fastens your seat, connects the body parts of your Mini-Flip and Wagon, and paired with a spring delivers Flip's magically simple rock-n-roll conversion. Grab a hex key and the same capping nut becomes the hero of our disassembly strategy, allowing you to repair & refurbish every part of every Wishbone product. Forever.
Three very different bikes - Wishbone Bike Original made from wood, the Recycled Edition Bike and our factory custom Wishbone Cruise - all share certain core components and specifications enabling every Wishbone accessory to fit the entire range.
Three more beautiful Wishbone products - Wishbone Mini-Flip, Wagon and Cargo Bin - all emerged from the same starting point. Just Rich, alone in his workshop, radio on, contemplating what else he could make from the curvy base of Wishbone Flip.
Modularity is the mother of our sustainability values. It enables longer product life through adjustability, repairability and replacement. It empowers product improvement and inspires new product design, while maximising efficiency and minimising waste.
